Home backup battery calculator

A home backup battery does not need to run the whole house, only the circuits you care about in an outage. This page starts with a fridge and chest freezer, the modem and router, lights, a gas furnace's blower fan, a TV and phone chargers for one day, about 5.3 kWh. BatteryBankCalc sizes the battery at 48 V, the inverter for the loads that can run together, and the solar that would refill it.

Packaged home batteries are rated in usable kWh; compare that with the usable Wh shown here. Any connection to house wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician.

How the battery bank calculator works

BatteryBankCalc adds watts × hours × quantity for every load to get watt-hours per day. Battery watt-hours = daily Wh × days of autonomy ÷ (usable depth of discharge × inverter efficiency), and amp-hours = that ÷ system voltage. Batteries in series = system voltage ÷ battery voltage; strings in parallel = amp-hours needed ÷ battery amp-hours, rounded up. Inverter = sum of all load watts × (1 + headroom), rounded up to a standard size. Solar array = daily Wh ÷ inverter efficiency ÷ (peak sun hours × system efficiency); controller amps = installed panel watts ÷ system voltage × 1.25.

Depth of discharge, inverter efficiency (90%), solar system efficiency (80%) and the 1.25 controller factor are common planning figures, not product specifications; follow your battery, inverter and controller manuals, and size cables and fuses for the current. A licensed electrician should connect any system to house wiring. Results are estimates.

    Frequently asked questions

How big a battery do I need for a power outage?

For essentials (fridge, freezer, internet, lights, furnace fan) often 5 to 10 kWh of usable storage per day. Central air, electric heat and cooking need far more.

How long will a 10 kWh battery power my house?

About as many days as your essential loads use 10 kWh: roughly two days for the example list here, much less with heating or air conditioning.

Can solar recharge a backup battery during an outage?

Only if the solar inverter or battery system is designed to island from the grid; many grid-tied systems shut down in an outage.

    Is BatteryBankCalc free?

Yes, with no sign-up or ads.

    Are my loads saved?

    Yes, in this browser only.
